The 790 is the first full-blown Adventure Bike to come along to approximate the compactness of my beloved 990 SMT. The 790 makes at least the same power as the Africa Twin, with significantly less weight and bulk. But it still makes about 20 HP less than my SMT, which is about the same weight.
Engine and gearbox. The 889 cc parallel twin engine produces 77 kW and 100 Nm, compared to the KTM 790 Adventure’s 70k W and 88 Nm. KTM has made improvements to the cylinder head, pistons, con-rods, crank case, crankshaft, balancer shafts and oil cooler. All of this helps the engine to run cooler and smoother, while performing a lot better.
I can buy a leftover new Africa Twin for around 10,500-11,000 minus taxes but including all fees. Used, I can get one for about 10k with under 2k miles with lots of expensive addons. The KTM 790 Adventure R will be closer to 16,000 before tax out the door. Is the 790 Adventure R worth 6K more?-87!!!!! lbs lighter!!!!-Cruise control!
